Shocked Shocked Shocked We're OK here in the big city although covered in a smoke haze from up country. It's the poor people in the Cariboo region from Cache Creek north to Quesnel that are in peril. My son and brother have both been forced to evacuate their properties due to imminent fire threat. And it aint over yet! Shocked Shocked

On another note I've been following the political BS about why the Coulson Mars isn't being used and the fire contracts are going to Conair Shocked

So the country burns and the best aircraft sits idle Mad

Smile Smile Smile Well, I guess it's who you talk to but apparently reliable sources say the Mars is too big to use most lakes in BC for refilling, it can't maneuver into the valleys and ravines where the fires are most stubborn and it's large load apparently breaks off small jack pine, (the most prevalent tree in the forest here in B.C.) and sends them hurtling ahead to ignite new fires in its path while endangering the lives of ground firefighters close by. . . . not to mention it's high maintenance costs etc.

I'm told it's much better at fighting large fires in grass and bush out in the flat country than in close confines and far from a water source. These new skimmer aircraft and the old DC-6s and Convair 560's along with helicopters, including the Cessna Sky Cranes seem to be most effective at this point..

Coulson has 'more irons in the fire' (excuse the pun) . . they have a few C-130's in their fleet now and are fitting out a bunch of surplus Canadair CL-146's.Plus he has a large heli logging show going on in Oregon. He's not hurting for business but uses the Mars as a publicity tool for attracting people to his other services I think. IMHO. Very Happy Very Happy

Smoky and warm here in Sidney, too... 30deg yesterday in 'filtered' sunlight.

Both sunrise and sunset feature a blood-red sun- quite spectacular until I
remember that some of the smoke particles may have been part of someone's
home a few days ago... Sad .
