Do you want to buy an airplane built by Vancouver Island teens?

The Van's RV-12, built by Campbell River teens, undergoes taxi testing.

Teenagers in Campbell River have built a 2-seater plane that goes up for auction at the start of April

That's how Bill Alder, the president of the Teenflight program in Campbell River, describes the two-seater plane built by local teenagers that is going up for auction.

Kids from the ages of 13 to 17 built the kit airplane as part of the program focused on getting teenagers interested in a possible aviation career.

Jennifer Newman: What teens can learn by having a summer job

Alder started the Teenflight program, based on similar groups in the U.S., after noticing the growing challenge of staffing in the industry.

"Aviation in general has really had a falling off in the last 20 years," Alder said.

"So there haven't been a lot of young people getting into the industry and of course with attrition, we are running out of people. Whether it is mechanics or pilots, it's becoming a problem."

The teens built a Van's RV-12 plane under the supervision of local mentors including pilots and engineers.

"Van's Aircraft builds more kit airplanes than anybody else in the world. Very high quality, very easy to build, very well documented."

According to Alder, the teens who helped build the plane have had a chance to fly in it.

"They were pretty excited about building the airplane to start with, and then they all got a chance to go for a ride in it. It's kind of,' wow, I actually built this thing.'"

The plane goes up for auction on April 1 at Teenflight.ca for a starting bid of $79,000 US.

Just want to keep the program going

However, Alder says if someone wants to buy it for $105,000 US, they can take it away right now.

"We are not looking to make any money from the project," Alder said.

"We just want to perpetuate the project we have going here."

Money from the sale of the two-seater plane will go to buy more kits for local teens to build.

Alder says it would be nice if the plane stayed in Canada, but he expects it to go south of the border.

He added, however, that if the buyer were in Washington or Oregon, they would fly the plane to its new home.
